This visa allows the permanent residents to travel in and out of Australia once their travel validity on the 5 years permanent visa expires. They can be either inside or outside the country at the time of expiry. If they are outside, they cannot return to Australia as permanent residents without this visa. There is no age limit to apply for this visa. There is no limit to the number of resident return visas one can apply for. However, in order to be eligible for this visa the applicant has to fulfil the resident requirement criteria or demonstrate evidence of substantial ties to Australia, that are of a benefit to Australia.

Residence requirements

The permanent resident meets the residence requirement if, they have resided inside Australia for 2 years in last 5 years. They are eligible to get RRV (Subclass 155) which is a visa, valid for 5 years and allows the applicant to travel to and from Australia multiple times till the validity of visa.

The permanent residents who have resided inside Australia for at least one day but less than 2 years in the last 5 years, will be eligible to get RRV (Subclass 157).This is a one-year valid visa allowing the permanent residents to travel to and from Australia till the visa does not expire. After this visa expires the permanent resident is eligible to apply for RRV (Subclass 155) if they meet the criteria.
